I stopped putting work in the bookmark bar. Here is what broke.

I still use the bookmark bar. The bank, the analytics login, the one Google Doc I open every morning. Those should be one click. The bar falls apart when the thing you saved is a project, not a habit.

A project has extra information the bar cannot hold. Who is allowed to see it. Whether the PDF is the approved one. Whether the competitor URL is an example or a warning. Whether the link is even alive. Chrome will not tell you any of that. It will show you a favicon and a title the website chose for search engines.

What I tried before a dedicated folder

A shared Google Sheet. Columns for URL, owner, notes. It worked until two people edited at once and someone sorted the sheet. Also nobody wants to open a spreadsheet to click a link. They asked me to resend it in chat. Then we had both, out of date in different ways.

Notion. Fine if the whole team already lives there. For a client who just needs five references, asking them to learn a workspace is rude. I also ended up with pages that were half notes, half dumped URLs, and I still could not see what was due this week without another database.

A Slack canvas / pinned message. Funny for a week. Then the pin was twenty messages down and the canvas had three dead links. Chat is a river. I needed a drawer.

LinkBoard is the drawer. Directories with names. Notes on the links. A calendar for the dates that belong to that pile. A small poll when a group needs A or B. It is not trying to replace email. It is trying to stop me from hunting through email for a URL I already had.

Where the bookmark bar is still better

Personal, repeated, no explanation required. “Reset password for the host.” “The course portal.” I am not moving those. If I stuffed them into LinkBoard I would recreate the junk drawer with nicer CSS.

I also do not have a browser extension that saves the current tab in one click. That is a fair complaint. Copy, paste, write the note. The extra step is annoying. It is also why I only save things I can describe. That tradeoff is honest. If you need a read-it-later app with offline articles, this is the wrong product. Pocket and the rest exist.

A test I use

Would I send this URL to someone else with a one-line warning? If yes, it belongs in a directory with that line already written. If I would just hit the icon myself, leave it on the bar.
