I opened ten saved links. Five of them were useless.

Last winter I exported my bookmarks because I was smug about “getting organized.” The file was huge. I told myself I would sort it on Sunday. I did not. Months later I opened ten links from a folder named “useful.” Five were a waste of the click.

Here is the score, because I wrote it down like a petty accountant:

• Two domains were for sale. The articles were gone.
• One redirected to a homepage that had nothing to do with the title I had saved.
• One was a pricing page that no longer listed prices. Marketing had eaten it.
• One was a duplicate of a better source I already had, saved under a different title.
• Five still worked. Two of those I could not explain. I had no note.

That is a fifty percent failure rate if you count “works but I have no idea why I kept it.” I was treating saving as a hobby. It is not a hobby. It is a list I am asking future-me to trust.

What I do now, which is unglamorous

I do not import the archive. I make one directory for the project that is currently expensive. I move the links I opened this week. If I miss something from 2022, I can still search the export. I almost never miss it.

On Friday I open a sample, not the whole list. Ten is enough to smell rot. If two are dead, I am behind. If none are dead, I stop early. I put a recurring event on the LinkBoard calendar called “15 minutes, links.” When I skip it, the folder starts lying again. I know because I skip it.

Public lists get a harder pass. If I would not email a link to a client, it does not stay public. Dead URLs on a public page make the whole site look abandoned. Google is not wrong to treat that as junk.

A rule that sounds mean and works

If I cannot write a note in the time it takes the page to load, I do not save the page. That killed my “read later” pile. I still read later. I just do not pretend a naked URL is a plan.
